Birth in Pictures: Touch
Hannah Bracher-Smith's latest column
Physical touch provides vital support for mothers and birthing people as they labour. It has a huge number of wellbeing benefits – physical, mental and emotional.
the benefits are unparalleled, and often overlooked
It can be used as a tool for grounding and centring, to reduce anxiety and panic, to increase oxytocin and to give pain relief through pressure points and massage. I am yet to be present at a birth where touch has not played a significant part, and it’s invaluable in the postpartum period too. The benefits are unparalleled, and often overlooked.
As a birth photographer and doula, a simple act of consented touch, whether it be a handhold, a head stroke or localised pressure, is something that draws my attention time and time again.
